Moving an Established Perennial

Did you know it’s okay to move your established perennials?

Why should I move my perennial?

If your plants are getting too large or start to cast a shadow your other plants, resulting in less growth, it’s time to move them!

When should I move my perennial?

It’s best to dig up and move your perennials in the early spring when the plants have just started to emerge, think April and May. This is when your perennials are waking back up from the long winter.

How should I move my perennial?

When you’re ready to dig up your plant, make sure to dig at least 6 inches away from the base, this will ensure that enough of the root system moves with it to its new home.

Make sure that the new location is well amended with compost or soil conditioner and is dug at least twice as wide and deep as the size of the root system is that you’re bringing over. Fill in with the amended soil around your plant and give it a good couple pats to press down the plant.

How often should I water my perennial?

You’ll want to treat this plant as if it’s brand new to your garden. Since it is no longer considered an established perennial, you should water heavily every day in the first few weeks of it being planted. This ensures that the root system regrows!
