Is your annual hanging basket looking a little tired? Or not getting enough blooms? Well, we encourage you to cut it back! Plants will naturally grow out of control if you let them, especially sun loving vining annuals. If you’ve purchased a hanging basket from us this year and you’ve had it about a month, it’s time to give it the chop. Trimming back your hanging basket encourages more blooms and fuller growth. We recommend this for a petunia or calibrachoa, or other vining plant baskets.
Start by holding a section of the vining or trailing plant and cutting it at the halfway point. There is no specific place you need to cut your plants on their stems; you can trim them anywhere along the vine. Continue cutting the trailing plants all the way around the hanging basket, making sure it stays even all the way around. Finally, fluff up your hanging basket to find any stragglers. Over a few weeks, your basket will be filling back in and you’ll have more blooms!
